Bethlen’s castle was confiscated in 1946 and from then on the building was used by the Ministry of Health as a mental asylum. The inheritors have demanded the return of the building which has since lost all of its decorative elements. The case has not yet been settled.

The castle’s founder was one of the foremost public personalities of Transylvanian Hungarians,  Bethlen (III) Béla (1888-1979), during the 20th century, first as the president of the Transylvanian Economic Union, then as the Lay President of the Transylvanian Reformed Church, and from 1940 as the Lord-Lieutenant of Beszterce-Naszód and Szolnok-Doboka Counties.
